Ground Control ‘Spring Subs’
Sunday 23rd May, 2010
Leicester Shootfighters took 5 medals at the first Ground Control event of 2010 this past weekend.
Kieren Lewin stepped up to the intermediate division (and -73kg category after missing weight!) taking the GOLD medal, utilising some nice back takes and submitting all his opponents by rear naked choke.
Ranjeet “Suave” Baria won SILVER and Liam “Bermuda” Corrigan BRONZE in the -73kg advanced, submitting their opponents until both lost close fights on points to eventual winner Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Marcos Nardini.
Guy Lewis took SILVER in what was probably the biggest division of day, the -87kg novice. In a fantastic performance for his first competition he went straight through 3 opponents making it to the final where he lost on points.
LJ “Xena” Adams took SILVER in the women’s division, winning her first fight by rear naked choke but losing on points in the final to a much more experienced grappler. That makes two silver medals in her first 8 months of training!
Karsten Lenjoint and Luke Welford also competed and showed some marked improvements in areas of their game. Luke jumped straight in the advanced division for his first nogi event, beating veteran Stuart Barrs but losing on points in his other bout.
It was a great event and the team once again did the club proud.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to the people who came to support us.
